Assignment 7

Just a friendly reminder that this week's blog post was covered in class last Wednesday. You need to write about heroes who were considered disobedient and the impact that they have had on the world as a result of that disobedience.

Vicki and her husband were fundamentalist Christians and did not tolerate religious views on the basis of accepting other religions as equal to our own and imignation. Vicki examined her daughter's textbook closely and raised the textbook problem with several neighbors and with her minister, all of whom agreed to join her in a meeting with the school board. At the meeting, the parents aired their concerns and demanded that new textbooks be chosen for their children. The board announced that it could not afford to purchase new textbooks, and that the parents' objections would be considered in future years. Vicki Frost and several other parents began to come into the school at the appointed hour for reading classes. The parents then removed their children from school entirely, and the local prosecutors office filed charges against the parents in state court. The parents obtained legal counsel and filed a suit in federal court against the school board.

Malcolm X was initially known for his controversial stance of racial separatism, but while he still advocated Black Nationalism, he also accepted a more orthodox Islam view of the "true brotherhood" of man. He came to believe that there was a potential for cross-racial alliance. Malcolm was a charismatic speaker, and soon was able to use newspaper columns, television, and radio to spread the Nation of Islam’s message. Membership to the Nation of Islam increased dramatically because of Malcolm's speeches. However, while many blacks were embracing his message, civil rights leaders rejected him. Malcolm also became a concern of the government.
